Resources for Childcare Providers

Video: Disaster Planning for Child Daycare Providers
Description: A group of stakeholders created the outline for a pre-disaster video for child daycare providers in Los Angeles County. The video aims to help day care providers think about the disaster planning process in an easier way. The end goal in creating the video is to continue to build knowledge in the nation for children and future generations.

Workshop Series Prepares Childcare Facility Staff
Earlier this year, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region V partnered with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services–Region V, Administration for Children and Families (ACF), and Office of Head Start to create and host a four-part workshop series about emergency preparedness for childcare center directors and employees in Chicago.

During the workshops, participants discussed ways to better prepare their facilities for emergencies like storms and manmade disasters in the event that one occurs while children are on campus. Participants planned escape routes for their facilities and also developed action plans to leverage resources in close proximity to their facilities. These activities encouraged participants to look outside their own facilities to collaborate with nearby hospitals, schools, houses of worship, and retail stores.

Childcare center staff from throughout the city were enthusiastic about their takeaways from the series. “This workshop has opened my eyes to the world of emergency preparedness,” said one participant. “I’ve learned valuable information that can help to make my center more prepared for emergencies.”
